  • Former U.S. president will work with the Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive. For his part, President Rene Preval rejects criticism by the opposition assimilating the role of the international community to a form of occupation of Haiti.

    Former U.S. President Bill Clinton co-chair with Prime Minister of Haiti, Jean-Max Bellerive, the Interim Committee for the Reconstruction of Haiti (HRIC).

    Haitian President Rene Preval made the announcement Wednesday during a press conference. “[Bill Clinton] is a personality who has always been interested in the development of Haiti,” said President PrĂ©val.

    The head of the Haitian State has added the other members of the Committee shall be appointed by Haitian institutions, government and civil society, and the countries that have offered to give 200 million dollars for the reconstruction of Haiti or who have agreed to forgive the debt for the same amount.

    Presenting the first 100 days after the earthquake, Mr. Preval has rejected criticism by opposition assimilating the role of the international community as a form of occupation of Haiti.

    “I do not see where there is loss of sovereignty of Haiti, Preval has supported the president, adding that he had a veto right and duty to approve all projects submitted by the commission.

    Preval also said that the commission will have as many Haitians as from several foreign countries who have offered their help after the earthquake of January 12, which killed at least 220 000 deaths.

    The co-chairs of the committee, Bill Clinton and Jean-Max Bellerive, should meet in about three weeks to set up a secretariat to coordinate development projects.

    Coca-Cola invests in the pearl of the Antilles

    Meanwhile, the Coca-Cola has announced the launch of an agricultural project in Haiti. The project, called Hope Haiti, is to develop the cultivation of mango and 25 000 farmers to help create a sustainable industry for the production of mango juice.

    Coca-Cola plans to invest 7.5 million dollars in this project over a period of five years.
